What would you give up for the one you truly respect?
Ekalavya’s Guru Dakshina shows us how deep devotion can truly go.
In the Mahabharata, Ekalavya was a young tribal boy with a dream—to become the greatest archer. But he wasn’t allowed to learn from Dronacharya, the royal teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas.
So, what did he do?
With a heart full of faith, Ekalavya made a clay idol of Dronacharya in the forest. Day after day, he practiced in front of it, training himself with unmatched focus and discipline. His skill grew so sharp, he could shoot arrows with stunning precision—even without a real guru beside him.
One day, Dronacharya came across Ekalavya’s talent and was astonished. But knowing his promise to Arjuna—to make him the greatest archer—Drona asked for guru dakshina (a teacher’s fee).
He asked for Ekalavya’s right thumb.
Without a pause, Ekalavya smiled, bowed, and cut off his thumb. He offered it with love, not regret.
Even though it ended his archery dreams, he honored his guru above all. His sacrifice became one of the purest symbols of respect and discipline in Indian history.
Ekalavya’s Guru Dakshina teaches you that real devotion asks for nothing in return—but gives everything.
🕉️ Did you know? In some traditions, Ekalavya is worshipped as a symbol of undying devotion and willpower.
