In the great epic of the Ramayana, there’s a beautiful little tale that often goes unnoticed—the story of Lord Rama and the Squirrel. It’s short, sweet, and full of meaning.
As you may know, Lord Rama and his army of vanaras (monkey warriors) were building a bridge to Lanka—Rama Setu—to rescue Sita. The task was huge. Massive rocks were being moved and placed into the ocean. Everyone was working together with great strength and speed.
Among them was a tiny squirrel.
Yes, a squirrel! It ran back and forth, picking up small pebbles in its furry little paws and tossing them into the sea. The other animals laughed. “What can your pebbles do?” they teased. “We’re moving mountains, and you bring dust?”
But the squirrel didn’t stop. It was doing all it could, with love and devotion.
Lord Rama saw this.
He gently picked up the squirrel in his hands, stroked its back, and thanked it. “Every effort matters,” he said. “Big or small, what matters is the heart behind it.”
Lord Rama’s loving fingers gently created the three white stripes on the Indian squirrel’s back that day—a divine blessing for a humble heart.
This story of Lord Rama and the Squirrel teaches us something precious:No act of devotion is ever too small.
In our own lives, we often feel we must do grand things to be seen or valued. But remember this—your small acts of kindness, your silent prayers, your sincere efforts—they all matter.
Whether you’re building bridges of love, trust, or service, be like the squirrel. Do your part. Do it with heart.
And trust that divine grace sees everything, even the tiniest pebble you place with love.
